A leak is any path through the seal — the crimp, the weld, the valve, the terminal feed-through — through which electrolyte vapour can travel. The test does not look for visible drips; it looks for microscopic paths, because the vapour escapes long before a liquid drop ever forms, and the vapour is what corrodes, ages and, in lithium cells, fuels the fire triangle.
Three consequences follow the same hole: electrolyte loss dries the cell and kills capacity; moisture ingress degrades the chemistry (lithium reacts violently with water); and the escaping vapour is corrosive and flammable. A leaking cell is not a weaker cell — it is a cell on a countdown, and the countdown's length depends on which of the three consequences arrives first.
The laboratory methods, in order of sensitivity:

The production version is the same physics on an assembly line: 100% of cells pass through the check in seconds, not hours — typically a helium or pressure-decay station gated to reject automatically. The lab version then audits the line: periodic sampling with the high-sensitivity methods keeps the inline equipment honest. The two levels together are what make "sealed" a verified word rather than a hope.
My position: Leak testing is the quiet quality gate — no headline standards, no dramatic failure videos, just the unglamorous truth that the seal is the battery, and every cell you have ever trusted passed a leak check you never saw.
Why: The industry's safety record rests on unglamorous gates like this one. The leak check is cheap, universal and decisive — which is why it runs on every cell, and why its absence in a cut-price product is the single most reliable warning sign a buyer can look for.
