Cycle life is always quoted against a specific depth of discharge (DoD), temperature and charge rate. A shallow cycle (20% DoD) yields far more cycles than a deep one (80% DoD), which is why a bare "2,000 cycles" claim is meaningless without its conditions. The result is reported as the cycle count at which capacity falls to a threshold — typically 80% of original.

These are codified in standards such as UN 38.3 (transport), IEC 62133 and IEC 62660 (cell safety). A battery that passes abuse testing is not "impossible to fail" — it has been shown to fail in a controlled way under defined abuse.
Position: A cycle-life number without its depth-of-discharge is marketing, and a "safety certified" claim without the named standard is vague — both need their conditions to mean anything.
Reasoning: Cycle count and safety are both condition-dependent, yet they are routinely quoted as bare numbers. The buyer who asks "at what DoD, temperature and rate" for cycle life, and "which standard" for safety, is the one who actually gets a comparable figure.
