A common method (under EN 50342) discharges the battery to a defined state, then applies a charge voltage and measures the current the battery accepts over a fixed interval — the charge acceptance is the charge (amp-hours) recovered in that window. A healthy battery accepts charge quickly; a battery with high internal resistance — from sulfation or corrosion — accepts little. The test is effectively a read on internal resistance through the charging path rather than the discharge path.

This is the concrete reason start-stop systems specify EFB or AGM: the higher charge acceptance means the battery recovers fast enough between engine-off events to stay charged. A flooded battery in the same duty cycle accepts charge too slowly and progressively under-charges.

Charge acceptance declines as a battery ages, for the same reasons CCA does — rising internal resistance from sulfation and corrosion. Because the decline shows on the charging side first, a low charge-acceptance reading is often the earliest warning of a failing start-stop battery, before capacity or CCA have visibly fallen.
Position: Charge acceptance is the battery property nobody quotes but every start-stop system depends on — and it is the earliest signal of aging because it reads the charging side, where resistance rises before the discharge side shows it.
Reasoning: It measures the charging path, where aging shows up first. A buyer or technician who checks charge acceptance catches a failing start-stop battery before it strands the driver — and understands why EFB and AGM exist in the first place.
